WWE Raw fans are familiar with Floyd Mayweather’s ability to promote himself, but they’re also familiar with his ability to fight and he has to be considered the No.1 fighter at 147 pounds. He has booked the MGM Grand for May 5th and he’ll defend his WBC welterweight title, but against who?
Manny Pacquiao
This is a no-brainer, but even those that use bookie software aren’t holding their breath for this superfight. Pacquiao didn’t look good in a controversial decision win over rival Juan Manuel Marquez (whom Mayweather handled easily) and they may have a rematch. Also, there is the bad blood between Mayweather and Bob Arum, who used to be Mayweather’s promoter, but now handles Pacquiao’s business.
Miguel Cotto
Cotto blasted Antonio Margarito to avenge one of his two pro losses, and Pacquiao isn’t on his radar, so Cotto may try Mayweather as he looks for a couple of big fights to ride off into the sunset with. Cotto wouldn’t be given much of a chance against Mayweather and he’d have to drop back down to 147 pounds from 154, but it’s a possibility.
Victor Ortiz/Andre Berto
Ortiz lost to Mayweather under shady circumstances this year, although it was his fault, and his next fight is a rematch with Berto, who lost to Ortiz in April in a “Fight of the Year” contender. These two fight in February, so they may not be recovered in time to take on Mayweather on Cinco de Mayo, but neither would be favored by sports betting websites anyway.
